GRANGER Background:
In 1769 Reverend James Granger, an avid print collector, published his 'Biographical History of England.' The book was notable for its extra leaves, left blank for the reader to embellish with illustrations from their own collection. Collecting prints to insert into existing books became a popular pastime of the leisured, and throughout the nineteenth century many other books were 'grangerized' in this same manner.
When Erika and William Glover founded their historical picture library in 1964, it was not difficult to find a suitable name to grace what for fifty years was known as The Granger Collection. Today we are known simply as Granger - Historical Picture Archive, a convenient and reliable source for images from prehistoric times through the recent past. Granger's holdings have grown to encompass millions of engravings, photographs, lithographs, and many other forms of illustration.
On our site you have instant access to the vast majority of our images, each meticulously keyworded and accurately captioned. In addition to this vast online collection, our archive contains thousands of undigitized images, and we represent the collections of a number of institutions and photographers. Any one of our highly-skilled and knowledgeable researchers would be happy to assist you with your search.
Granger offers a number of digital services, including custom scans, retouching and custom colorization. In the past, Granger's talented artist's colored black and white illustrations by hand; today we can digitally recreate historical images in full color. Our high resolution images are of exceptional quality, suitable for use in print, film, projection and digital display. Should you need a larger image, we can create a new scan from the original print.
We invite you to register on www.granger.com to activate the advanced features of our site, including the ability to find prices, create, save and email lightboxes, and order high-resolution files.
Please feel free to contact us for assistance with image research, inquiries into custom scans and colorization, or for any other matters. We look forward to serving you!
