CIVIL WAR: APPOMATTOX, 1865. The formal surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia to the Army of the Potomac at Appomattox, Virginia, 12 April 1865, three days after General Robert E. Lee had accepted the terms presented by General Ulysses Grant. Pencil drawing, 1865, by John R. Chapin.
